Abstract

The manufacturing engineering has developed from traditional manual manufacturing to advanced technology driven manufacturing systems that have a high degree of automation, digitization and intelligence. The purpose of this review is to indicate some of the key developments, such as the change from industrial revolution to industry 4.0. In fact, technological innovations like additive manufacturing, robotics, artificial intelligence, IoT and digital twin technology have revolutionized production systems, providing more efficiency, accuracy and personalization in production. Smart manufacturing is the integration of the cyber-physical system, big data, and cloud computing for real-time monitoring and decision-making. Energy efficiency, waste minimization and principles of circular economy are key features of sustainable manufacturing. Ideal though these developments are, there are still obstacles like system integration, skill gaps, cyber security threats, and high implementation costs that remain. The future directions focus on autonomous systems, AI optimization, human–machine collaboration, and sustainable innovation. The development of manufacturing engineering is moving towards 'smart', 'flexible' and 'environmentally friendly' manufacturing systems, which are changing the industrial competitiveness and economic development around the world.
